I was wondering what to blog about when Desiree gave me a great idea! She mentioned old techniques that women would use to do an abortion at home. It reminded me of a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet called Revolutionary Road. This movie was about a young couple in the 1950's who have a depressing relationship. Kate's character is unsatisfied as a suburban housewife and Leonardo is unsatifised with working at marketing company. They wanted something different so they decided to move to Paris. On Leonardo's birthday, he sleeps with a secretary at his job and he continues to. Later on in the movie, Leonardo gets a promotion at his job and after everything was set to go to Paris, he decides that he doesn't want to go. He then tells his wife of the affair and she didn't even care, she was COMPLETELY FINE WITH IT. When your wife doesn't care about her husband having an affair, you know that marriage is beyong repair. Eventually, she gets pregnant and she wants an abortion. Leonardo doesn't want her to so one day she acts as the perfect house wife then when he goes to work, she tries to use a suction device to abort the baby. It goes wrong and she loses a lot of blood and dies.
Before there were clinics to operate abortions people would creat their own concoctions to abort their babies. Desiree told me that Mrs. Hansbury said they used to use hangers to have an abortion. Some people would drink poisons, knitting needles, hot pins, while they were sitting in a scalding hot bath to prevent the birth of another child. CRAZY! Not only were they trying to kill their baby, they were also endangering themselves. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, but I guess people were so desperate to not have babies that they would do anything?

The midwives in days of old had two functions: bringing babies into the world and performing abortions. I remember reading that they had a kind of spoon contaption back in the old days.
